Windsor Invests $22.3 Million in Road Safety

Windsor is pumping $22.3 million into high tech traffic safety systems including red light cameras, traffic sensors and 360° CCTV and is beefing up its intelligent transportation system.

Mayor Drew Dilkens says, “Modernizing Windsor’s traffic infrastructure to make our roads safer, better connected and easier to navigate is among Council’s top priorities. It is why we have allocated more than 40 percent of the City’s budget toward capital improvements to our roads and transportation systems. Technology is an effective traffic management tool and Council is proud to invest in intelligent systems that detect pedestrians and cyclists, help enforce traffic laws and maintain a safe flow of traffic to minimize hot spots. We will continue to fund intelligent traffic systems and policies that make our communities more welcoming to travellers of all modes of transportation.”

The City already has a fully integrated Advanced Traffic Management System. All elements in the field related to traffic, communicate back to the system and are monitored via its fibre network.

The City has installed a new high-tech traffic sensor to detect pedestrians, cyclists and travellers who use various modes of active transportation, such as scooters and e-bikes. It gives traffic engineers real-time, reliable traffic data on active transportation travellers for the first time while managing traffic flows. When a cyclist enters the detection zone, the system can trigger the traffic lights to change without the cyclist having to press the crosswalk button.

Modernizing Windsor’s traffic infrastructure to make our roads safer, better connected and easier to navigate is among Council’s top priorities. It is why we have allocated more than 40 percent of the City’s budget toward capital improvements to our roads and transportation systems.

Traffic Operations is modernizing Windsor’s closed-circuit television cameras with upgraded equipment, including 360-degree cameras, to expand traffic coverage at intersections citywide. The CCTV cameras help engineers monitor traffic flow and allow them to modify signals in response to real-time events. By March 2022, the number of CCTV traffic cameras in Windsor had increased by 66 per cent to 200.
